Abstract

The aim of this article is to critically reflect on Frank Schneider’s recent book Das erschütterte Ich. Trauma verstehen und bewältigen, which addresses Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD). Drawing on selected clinical narratives and analyses presented in the volume, the author develops a personal reflection on several of its central themes: the heterogeneity of traumatic experiences, the role of first responders during the acute phase of trauma, and the shame and silence that frequently surround victims and their experiences. Particular attention is also given to the book’s concluding discussion of “post-traumatic growth,” including its reference to the case of Gisèle Pelicot. The discussion concludes by
emphasizing the importance of developing an authentic “culture of listening”.
